~Saltwater Fly Tying Class

I am pleased to announce that I have partnered with Great Outdoor Provision Company of Wilmington, NC to present our first Saltwater Fly Tying Class. Starting in February of 2009 we will begin a six part series in saltwater fly tying.

The class will meet at Great Outdoor Provision Company every third Thursday once a month from Feb to July between 7 and 9pm. Admission is $25 per student, limit 12 students, for the six classes and materials and hooks are provided along with instruction. We have limited vises and encourage our tyers to bring their own vise for experience and convenience.

We will focus on a new pattern and illustrate new techniques each month. Learn to tie patterns that I rely on to catch fish on a daily basis and cover the water column in the process. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to meet fellow fly rodders/tyers and learn some new techniques for tying to advance your skills to the next level.

Feb 19th: Cape Fur Shrimp
March 19th: Vernon's Killer Kwan
April 16th: Mighty Minnow (Craft Fur Variant)
May 21st: Vernon's Fiddlin' Crab
June 18th: Tarpon Toad (Bunny Variant)

Feel free to contact me by phone or email to enroll or simply pass this along to a friend if you know of someone who might enjoy learning to tie better Saltwater Flies.

Surf City IFA Redfish Tour June 2008

This year marked the first ever Surf City, NC Redfish tour tournament and the first tournament the IFA has held in North Carolina. On June 7th, 2008 with a beautiful weather forecast forty-three teams converged on Topsail Islands' sound side waters for a chance to compete for first place and the title to a Ranger Banshee boat. Twenty-nine of those teams weighed fish in that day with the first place team weight of 14.87 lbs. being taken by friends Bill Slaughter and Gary Wysong (see photo).

Total weight of redfish weighed in during the tournament was 300.44 lbs. all of which were released after the weigh in. My team angler Capt. Tommy Scarborough and I fished the tournament with fly rods and caught eight reds on the fly that day and culled several fish to put us in 10th place with a total weight of 12.28 lbs. Tommy and I had a great time fishing together and chasing sight fishable redfish all day, this will be a tournament I am sure not to forget soon!

Congrats to Bill and Gary for putting up some impressive weights on fish and thanks to Captain Tommy Scarborough of Georgetown Coastal Adventures for talking me into fishing the tournament!
